Gino Guidugli
Gino Guidugli passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns, leading Cincinnati to a 32-14 victory over Marshall in the Fort Worth Bowl.
Fort Worth, TX  - Gino Guidugli passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns, leading Cincinnati to a 32-14 victory over Marshall in the Fort Worth Bowl.

Guidugli was an efficient 25-of-37 with an interception for Cincinnati (7-5), which improved to 4-4 in bowl games. Earnest Jackson and Brent Celek each caught touchdown passes.

The Bearcats held Marshall scoreless for the final three quarters, and their defense blocked two punts in the game. The blocks led to nine points.

Marshall quarterback Stan Hill was 14-of-30 for 137 yards and a touchdown in the loss. He was intercepted once and fumbled once.

The Thundering Herd (6-6), who started this season 0-3 before winning six of their final eight games, fell to 5-3 in bowl games. They had won their last five bowl games.

Cincinnati jumped out to a 7-0 lead when linebacker Derrik Haitchcock returned a blocked Marshall punt 10 yards for a touchdown just 1:00 into the game.

The Bearcats capitalized on another Marshall mistake when they turned a Hill fumble into a 23-yard field goal by Kevin Lovell, taking a 10-0 lead with 6:23 remaining in the first quarter.

Bowling Green bowls over Memphis

Bowling Green Falcons Logo
Mobile, AL  - Omar Jacobs completed 26-of-44 passes for 371 yards and five touchdowns to lead Bowling Green to a 52-35 win over Memphis in the GMAC Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Jacobs, whose five touchdown throws set a GMAC Bowl record, was named the game's MVP for the Falcons (9-3), who closed out the season with wins in eight of their final nine games.

P.J. Pope rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and also added a receiving score while Steve Sanders hauled in seven balls for 124 yards with two touchdowns in the win.

Charles Sharon chipped in 117 receiving yards and two scores for Bowling Green.

Danny Wimprine went 26-of-39 for 320 yards with four touchdowns and an interception for the Tigers (8-4), who had their three-game winning streak halted.

DeAngelo Williams rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown for Memphis, but left the game in the third quarter with a lower leg injury. Williams, who was the third leading rusher in the nation, underwent x-rays on the right leg and it was revealed that he fractured the fibula, but is expected to make a full recovery. Williams is only a junior and has considered turning pro early, but now that decision might be put on hold as he recovers from the injury.

Owens undergoes successful surgery

Terrell Owens
Terrell Owens had surgery to stabilize his right ankle sprain which was injured during Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Baltimore, MD  - Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver Terrell Owens had successful surgery Wednesday to stabilize his right ankle sprain which was injured during Sunday's contest with Dallas.

"The surgery from a technical standpoint was very successful," said foot and ankle specialist Dr. Mark Myerson, who performed the procedure at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

The surgery, which took about an hour, consisted of inserting two screws and a plate. Myerson stated that in many cases only one screw would have been needed, but in order to speed up the rehabilitation and recovery process, a plate and a second screw was decided on.

"(Owens) has an amazing attitude," said Myerson.

Owens, arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL, left in the third quarter of Sunday's 12-7 victory over the Cowboys. He absorbed a pass from Donovan McNabb near midfield and was dragged to the ground by Dallas safety Roy Williams.

Owens then left the field on his own power and limped to the tunnel leading to Philadelphia's locker room. He was then carted off for x-rays, which were negative. However, more tests on Monday showed more damage, leading to the surgery.

Auburn promotes one of its own to AD

Auburn Tigers Logo
Auburn, AL  - Auburn announced on Wednesday that Jay Jacobs will take over as athletic director for David Housel, who is retiring after 10 years at the post.

"I am extremely excited about the opportunity of directing Auburn's athletic program," said Jacobs. "We have a great tradition of success here and I look forward to helping Auburn continue to achieve positive results on the playing field and in the classroom."

Jacobs was the senior associate athletic director for development, but now becomes 14th athletic director in Auburn's history and will oversee an athletics program with a $47-million budget and 21 sports.

Jacobs served in various capacities in the Auburn athletic department, holding positions of associate athletic director for operations (1994-2001) and assistant athletic director for support services (1991-94).

The Alabama native, Jacobs also lettered two seasons as an offensive tackle on the Auburn football team in 1982 and 1983. After one season as a coach at Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn, Jacobs returned to his alma matter in 1985 as the assistant strength and conditioning coach. After serving two seasons as a graduate football coach, Jacobs was named conditioning coach, a position he held from 1988-91.

Panthers crush Spiders, remain unbeaten

Carl Krauser
Carl Krauser scored a career-high 31 points with six rebounds and five assists to lead Pitt past Richmond, 69-60.
Pittsburgh, PA  - Carl Krauser scored a career-high 31 points with six rebounds and five assists, and No. 10 Pittsburgh remained unbeaten with a 69-60 victory over Richmond at Petersen Events Center.

Chris Taft added 11 points and Ronald Ramon had 10 for the Panthers (9-0), who won despite being outshot 45 percent to 41 percent.

They made up for it their poor shooting percentage by hitting two more three-pointers than Richmond and by making 11 more free throws, although they were just 16-of-28 from the line.

Jermaine Bucknor scored 13 points to lead the Spiders (4-4), who have lost three of their last four. Kevin Steenberge and Patrick O'Malley added 12 points apiece in the loss, and T.J. Paterick scored 10.

Pittsburgh led by as many as 10 points in the first half after a 10-2 run made it 29-19 with 6:06 remaining before the break. Krauser bookended the spurt with a pair of three-pointers and scored eight of the 10 points.

But Richmond scored 12 of the final 16 points in the first half to pull within 33-31 at intermission. The Spiders outshot Pittsburgh 54 percent to 50 in the half.

The Panthers took control of the game with an 11-3 run in the second half, turning a one-point lead into an nine-point cushion. Ramon sparked the rally with a three-pointer, Krauser added two more threes and Chevon Troutman's tip- in made it 47-38 with 13:24 remaining.

NFL hits Jags' Darius hard

Donovin Darius
Donovin Darius was slapped with a $75,000 fine for the vicious forearm shot he delivered to Robert Ferguson this past Sunday.
New York, NY  - Jacksonville Jaguars safety Donovin Darius was slapped with a $75,000 fine for the vicious forearm shot he delivered to Green Bay Packers wide receiver Robert Ferguson this past Sunday.

NFL Director of Football Operations Gene Washington issued the fine, noting in a letter to Darius that on the play, "you violently and unnecessarily struck your opponent in the neck and head area with your forearm."

Ferguson remains in a hospital after suffering a sprained neck.

After making a 31-yard catch in the fourth quarter, Ferguson was hit by Darius' left forearm in the neck and immediately collapsed to the ground. Ferguson held on to the ball, but his helmet was jarred loose and he lay flat on his back for more than five minutes while the medical staff secured him to a stretcher.

Darius was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the play and was ejected from the game. He was booed heavily by the Lambeau Field crowd as he left the field with the hood raised on his parka.

"I thought it was a cheap shot," Packers head coach Mike Sherman said afterward.

Darius was apologetic.

"I always try to play within the rules," he said. "I understand that sometimes these unfortunate things happen and I just pray for Robert's speedy recovery. I'm sorry that it turned out the way it did. It was nothing intentional. I love to play this game a hundred miles an hour and I never do anything to play outside the rules."

Darius has no prior history of on-field violations of this magnitude, but Washington's letter emphasized that future infractions of this type by Darius will lead to increased disciplinary action, including a possible suspension.

Spadafora pleads guilty in shooting case

Paul Spadafora
Paul Spadafora, who earlier this month tested positive for cocaine and was jailed on violation of his bond, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and aggravated assault -- both felonies.
Pittsburgh, PA  - Former lightweight champion Paul Spadafora pleaded guilty Monday in connection with an October 2003 shooting of his girlfriend.

Spadafora, who earlier this month tested positive for cocaine and was jailed on violation of his bond, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and aggravated assault -- both felonies.

Prosecutors dropped charges of attempted homicide and reckless endangerment.

The weapons charge carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years, while the assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Sentencing will come at a later date.

Spadafora was charged with shooting his girlfriend, Nadine Russo, on October 26, 2003 following an argument. The two have since become engaged.

Prior to that, Spadafora was arrested for urinating on a Pittsburgh street while intoxicated and was later convicted of disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

The 29-year-old Pittsburgh native last fought this past July 17 and posted a 10-round TKO of Francisco Campos to improve his undefeated record to 38-0-1. He moved up to the junior welterweight division after giving up his IBF lightweight title in June of 2003 following a draw with WBA champion Leonard Dorin in a unification bout one month prior.

SPECIALISTS

Vick could sit Sunday

Michael Vick
Michael Vick might get this Sunday off to rest an ailing shoulder.
Flowery Branch, GA  - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick might get this Sunday off to rest an ailing shoulder.

The NFC South champion Falcons are already locked into the No. 2 playoff seed after a gutty 34-31 overtime win this past Saturday against Carolina and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday that Vick likely won't play against New Orleans on Sunday.

Falcons head coach Jim Mora Jr. said Monday that Vick is not seriously injured, although the quarterback did take a couple of hits against the Panthers, including one to his throwing shoulder.

"Mike's fine," said Mora at his Monday news conference. "His shoulder is sore, but nothing his structurally wrong."

Asked if he would hold some of his players back in the wake of the severe injury to Philadelphia's Terrell Owens, Mora said he would not.

"No. Play to win," Mora said.

Vick threw for just 154 yards with two touchdowns on 11-of-28 passing in the victory against the Panthers, but his 12-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 1:37 left in the fourth quarter tied the game and forced the extra period. He was also intercepted twice and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Carolina's Julius Peppers.

One step closer to history

Peyton Manning
Peyton Manning threw a touchdown to Marvin Harrison to get one step closer to Dan Marino's 1984 record of 48.
Indianapolis, IN - Peyton Manning passed for 249 yards and another touchdown, Edgerrin James rushed for a score, and Indianapolis held on for a 20-10 victory over Baltimore at the RCA Dome.

Manning remains one touchdown pass shy of tying Dan Marino's 1984 record of 48 in one season. He ended 20-of-33, and had a chance to tie the record with less than a minute remaining in the game when a Cato June interception set up 1st- and-goal for the Colts.

But with a 10-point lead in hand, Manning and his team did the classy thing by kneeling out the clock.

Marvin Harrison caught five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown for the AFC South-champion Colts (11-3), who have now won seven straight. James rushed for 69 yards on 22 carries and caught one pass for 23 yards.

Kyle Boller passed for 210 yards and a touchdown for the Ravens (8-6), who have lost three of their last four during a tight race for the AFC's final wild card spot.

With a win in Green Bay earlier Sunday, Jacksonville moved ahead of Baltimore for the sixth and final AFC playoff spot.

Jamal Lewis rushed for 130 yards on 20 carries for Baltimore, and Todd Heap caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Jags freeze Favre and Pack

Byron Leftwich
Byron Leftwich was 9-of-20 for 121 yards and had two touchdown passes to lead Jacksonville past Green Bay 28-25.
Green Bay, WI  - Byron Leftwich threw two touchdown passes, Fred Taylor rushed for 165 yards and a score and Jacksonville escaped frozen Lambeau Field with a 28-25 victory over the host Packers.

Leftwich ended just 9-of-20 for 121 yards in the win, but was good enough to lead Jacksonville (8-6) to its second straight win. Jimmy Smith caught four passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Jaguars intercepted Brett Favre three times in the second half, including twice in the end zone, and recovered an onside kick after a late Packers touchdown made it a three-point game.

Favre finished 30-of-44 for 367 yards and two touchdown passes -- one each to Donald Driver and Antonio Chatman. Ahman Green rushed for 94 yards and Javon Walker had 11 receptions for 152 yards in the loss.

The Packers (8-6) have dropped two of three, but they clinched their fourth straight playoff berth before even taking the field by virtue of losses by Chicago, Carolina, Dallas and the New York Giants this weekend. They are just the ninth team ever to make the playoffs after a 1-4 start.

Green Bay's loss also means the Atlanta Falcons clinched a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Renteria officially joins Red Sox; Clement next?

Edgar Renteria

Edgar Renteria, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop, came to terms on a four-year contract with a club option for 2009.
Bronx, NY  - One day after losing Pedro Martinez to the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox officially made Edgar Renteria a part of their family, and Matt Clement may not be far behind.

Renteria, a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner at shortstop, came to terms on a four-year contract with a club option for 2009. The deal is believed to be worth $40 million.

"Edgar Renteria has proven himself to be not only one of the best shortstops in baseball but one of the most complete all-around players in the game," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. "His blend of speed, power, defense, durability and leadership makes him a terrific addition to the ball club."

Renteria had spent the last six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, who were swept by the Red Sox in the 2004 World Series. In fact, he made the final out of this past World Series by grounding out to Red Sox closer Keith Foulke. Renteria was signed by Florida as an amateur free agent in 1992 and earned a championship ring with the Marlins in 1997.

"It's unbelievable. It's amazing when you see that, to be the last out for the Red Sox championship," Renteria said. "So now that I play for the Red Sox, I hope I make the last out this year to win the championship."

Klitschko scores eighth-round knockout of Williams

Vitali Klitschko
Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight title with a eighth-round knockout of challenger Danny Williams.
Las Vegas, NV  - Vitali Klitschko retained his World Boxing Council heavyweight title with a eighth-round knockout of Danny Williams.

Klitschko dominated the bout throughout against his outclassed, overweight foe. Klitschko tipped the scales at 250 pounds before the bout, 20 less than Williams. The 520 combined pounds marks the heaviest total weight for a heavyweight title fight ever.

Klitschko floored Williams with a steady barrage of punches in the first round. Williams was repeatedly stunned in the first two rounds, but began to open up a bit in the third. Klitschko was very unorthodox, keeping his left hand down most of the bout, but Williams was unable to take advantage.

In the last seconds of the third round, Williams was hit with a left hook to the jaw and stumbled to the canvas.

Klitschko dominated the fourth round as well.

In the seventh, Williams lunged with a left hook and hurtled past Klitschko. The champion pushed him in the back of the head as he went by, and referee Jay Nady ruled it a knockdown.

In the eighth, Klitschko landed two uppercuts that stunned Williams, and a crushing overhand right hand floored Williams for the fourth time in the bout. Williams rose at the count of nine, but Nady waved a halt to the bout, as the challenger was hurt, his right eye was completely shut and he was bleeding. The official time of the stoppage came at 1:26 of the eighth round.

Klitschko improved to 35-2 with 34 knockouts.

Williams, the most recent conqueror of Mike Tyson, fell to 32-4.
