Fort Worth, TX - Gino
Guidugli passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns, leading
Cincinnati to a 32-14 victory over Marshall in the Fort
Worth Bowl.
Guidugli was an efficient 25-of-37 with an
interception for Cincinnati (7-5), which improved to 4-4 in
bowl games. Earnest Jackson and Brent Celek each caught
touchdown passes.
The Bearcats held Marshall scoreless for the final
three quarters, and their defense blocked two punts in the
game. The blocks led to nine points.
Marshall quarterback Stan Hill was 14-of-30 for 137
yards and a touchdown in the loss. He was intercepted once
and fumbled once.
The Thundering Herd (6-6), who started this season 0-3
before winning six of their final eight games, fell to 5-3
in bowl games. They had won their last five bowl games.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 7-0 lead when linebacker
Derrik Haitchcock returned a blocked Marshall punt 10 yards
for a touchdown just 1:00 into the game.
The Bearcats capitalized on another Marshall mistake
when they turned a Hill fumble into a 23-yard field goal by
Kevin Lovell, taking a 10-0 lead with 6:23 remaining in the
first quarter. |

Bowling Green bowls
over Memphis
|
Mobile, AL -
Omar Jacobs completed 26-of-44 passes for 371 yards and five
touchdowns to lead Bowling Green to a 52-35 win over Memphis
in the GMAC Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Jacobs, whose five touchdown throws set a GMAC Bowl
record, was named the game's MVP for the Falcons (9-3), who
closed out the season with wins in eight of their final nine
games.
P.J. Pope rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns on
29 carries and also added a receiving score while Steve
Sanders hauled in seven balls for 124 yards with two
touchdowns in the win.
Charles Sharon chipped in 117 receiving yards and two
scores for Bowling Green.
Danny Wimprine went 26-of-39 for 320 yards with four
touchdowns and an interception for the Tigers (8-4), who had
their three-game winning streak halted.
DeAngelo Williams rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown
for Memphis, but left the game in the third quarter with a
lower leg injury. Williams, who was the third leading rusher
in the nation, underwent x-rays on the right leg and it was
revealed that he fractured the fibula, but is expected to
make a full recovery. Williams is only a junior and has
considered turning pro early, but now that decision might be
put on hold as he recovers from the injury.

Owens undergoes
successful surgery
Terrell Owens had surgery to stabilize his right
ankle sprain which was injured during Sunday's game
against the Cowboys. |
Baltimore, MD
- Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver Terrell Owens had
successful surgery Wednesday to stabilize his right ankle
sprain which was injured during Sunday's contest with
Dallas.
"The surgery from a technical standpoint was very
successful," said foot and ankle specialist Dr. Mark
Myerson, who performed the procedure at Mercy Medical Center
in Baltimore, Maryland.
The surgery, which took about an hour, consisted of
inserting two screws and a plate. Myerson stated that in
many cases only one screw would have been needed, but in
order to speed up the rehabilitation and recovery process, a
plate and a second screw was decided on.
"(Owens) has an amazing attitude," said Myerson.
Owens, arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL,
left in the third quarter of Sunday's 12-7 victory over the
Cowboys. He absorbed a pass from Donovan McNabb near
midfield and was dragged to the ground by Dallas safety Roy
Williams.
Owens then left the field on his own power and limped
to the tunnel leading to Philadelphia's locker room. He was
then carted off for x-rays, which were negative. However,
more tests on Monday showed more damage, leading to the
surgery. |

Auburn promotes one
of its own to AD
|
Auburn, AL -
Auburn announced on Wednesday that Jay Jacobs will take over
as athletic director for David Housel, who is retiring after
10 years at the post.
"I am extremely excited about the opportunity of
directing Auburn's athletic program," said Jacobs. "We have
a great tradition of success here and I look forward to
helping Auburn continue to achieve positive results on the
playing field and in the classroom."
Jacobs was the senior associate athletic director for
development, but now becomes 14th athletic director in
Auburn's history and will oversee an athletics program with
a $47-million budget and 21 sports.
Jacobs served in various capacities in the Auburn
athletic department, holding positions of associate athletic
director for operations (1994-2001) and assistant athletic
director for support services (1991-94).
The Alabama native, Jacobs also lettered two seasons
as an offensive tackle on the Auburn football team in 1982
and 1983. After one season as a coach at Lee-Scott Academy
in Auburn, Jacobs returned to his alma matter in 1985 as the
assistant strength and conditioning coach. After serving two
seasons as a graduate football coach, Jacobs was named
conditioning coach, a position he held from 1988-91.

Panthers crush
Spiders, remain unbeaten
Carl Krauser scored a career-high 31 points with six
rebounds and five assists to lead Pitt past
Richmond, 69-60. |
Pittsburgh, PA
- Carl Krauser scored a career-high 31 points with six
rebounds and five assists, and No. 10 Pittsburgh remained
unbeaten with a 69-60 victory over Richmond at Petersen
Events Center.
Chris Taft added 11 points and Ronald Ramon had 10 for
the Panthers (9-0), who won despite being outshot 45 percent
to 41 percent.
They made up for it their poor shooting percentage by
hitting two more three-pointers than Richmond and by making
11 more free throws, although they were just 16-of-28 from
the line.
Jermaine Bucknor scored 13 points to lead the Spiders
(4-4), who have lost three of their last four. Kevin
Steenberge and Patrick O'Malley added 12 points apiece in
the loss, and T.J. Paterick scored 10.
Pittsburgh led by as many as 10 points in the first
half after a 10-2 run made it 29-19 with 6:06 remaining
before the break. Krauser bookended the spurt with a pair of
three-pointers and scored eight of the 10 points.
But Richmond scored 12 of the final 16 points in the
first half to pull within 33-31 at intermission. The Spiders
outshot Pittsburgh 54 percent to 50 in the half.
The Panthers took control of the game with an 11-3 run
in the second half, turning a one-point lead into an
nine-point cushion. Ramon sparked the rally with a
three-pointer, Krauser added two more threes and Chevon
Troutman's tip- in made it 47-38 with 13:24 remaining.

NFL hits Jags'
Darius hard
Donovin Darius was slapped with a $75,000 fine for
the vicious forearm shot he delivered to Robert
Ferguson this past Sunday. |
New York, NY
- Jacksonville Jaguars safety Donovin Darius was slapped
with a $75,000 fine for the vicious forearm shot he
delivered to Green Bay Packers wide receiver Robert Ferguson
this past Sunday.
NFL Director of Football Operations Gene Washington
issued the fine, noting in a letter to Darius that on the
play, "you violently and unnecessarily struck your opponent
in the neck and head area with your forearm."
Ferguson remains in a hospital after suffering a
sprained neck.
After making a 31-yard catch in the fourth quarter,
Ferguson was hit by Darius' left forearm in the neck and
immediately collapsed to the ground. Ferguson held on to the
ball, but his helmet was jarred loose and he lay flat on his
back for more than five minutes while the medical staff
secured him to a stretcher.
Darius was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty on the play and was ejected from the game. He was
booed heavily by the Lambeau Field crowd as he left the
field with the hood raised on his parka.
"I thought it was a cheap shot," Packers head coach
Mike Sherman said afterward.
Darius was apologetic.
"I always try to play within the rules," he said. "I
understand that sometimes these unfortunate things happen
and I just pray for Robert's speedy recovery. I'm sorry that
it turned out the way it did. It was nothing intentional. I
love to play this game a hundred miles an hour and I never
do anything to play outside the rules."
Darius has no prior history of on-field violations of
this magnitude, but Washington's letter emphasized that
future infractions of this type by Darius will lead to
increased disciplinary action, including a possible
suspension. |

Spadafora pleads
guilty in shooting case
Paul Spadafora, who earlier this month tested
positive for cocaine and was jailed on violation of
his bond, pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and
aggravated assault -- both felonies.
|
Pittsburgh, PA
- Former lightweight champion Paul
Spadafora pleaded guilty Monday in connection with an
October 2003 shooting of his girlfriend.
Spadafora, who earlier this month tested positive for
cocaine and was jailed on violation of his bond, pleaded
guilty to a weapons charge and aggravated assault -- both
felonies.
Prosecutors dropped charges of attempted homicide and
reckless endangerment.
The weapons charge carries a maximum prison sentence
of seven years, while the assault charge carries a maximum
sentence of 10 years.
Sentencing will come at a later date.
Spadafora was charged with shooting his girlfriend,
Nadine Russo, on October 26, 2003 following an argument. The
two have since become engaged.
Prior to that, Spadafora was arrested for urinating on
a Pittsburgh street while intoxicated and was later
convicted of disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
The 29-year-old Pittsburgh native last fought this
past July 17 and posted a 10-round TKO of Francisco Campos
to improve his undefeated record to 38-0-1. He moved up to
the junior welterweight division after giving up his IBF
lightweight title in June of 2003 following a draw with WBA
champion Leonard Dorin in a unification bout one month
prior. |
